FABCOS NATIONAL KO-OPERASIE (supports AFASA)
South Africa is fast becoming a net importer of agricultural products. Exports have been constant over the past three years whilst imports have grown tremendously over the same period.
The deduction is that less food is produced by South Africa in comparison to the demand. There is therefore a need to increase domestic production.
Strategic Objectives:
- To identify, acquire, operate and manage agricultural land for farming purposes (at least one per province)
- Research and identify agriculture role-players and stakeholders and secure partnership agreements with them. Examples include DTI, Land Bank, Afgri, Land Affairs, Agric. Dept.
- Secure a technical partner from SA or abroad to assist with farming methods, support and technologies
- Secure markets for agricultural produce sold by provincial co-operative
Business Model:
- FE National acquires and pays for the land.
- The Provincial Ko-operasies lease land from FE National and operate Ko-operasie businesses on the land.
- Stokvel fees are used to capitalize the Ko-operasies. The stokvel coffers are used as a gearing indicator that determines the value of the farm to be acquired by FE National.
- Production takes place on individual farms in the provinces.
- Government and social services-related sales (hospitals, prisons, schools, old-age homes, etc.) are conducted in provinces.
- On the ground in provinces, “Ko-Operasie winkels” sell retail farm products to local people and smaller farms.
