Pillar 2: Agri-Business

1. Crop Farming Business

FABCOS and member farms produce the following crops by province:

  • Limpopo Province – Beans and Sweet Potatoes
  • Free State – Potatoes and Onions
  • KwaZulu Nata – Gem Squash, Cabbage and Tomatoes
  • North West – Lucerne and Barley
  • Mpumalanga – Garlic, Ginger

All the above crops are under water irrigation from nearby dams and borehole water irrigation.

Fruit Farming FABCOS

2. Fruit Farming Business

Citrus production is largely limited to the irrigated areas of the Limpopo Province, Mpumalanga, the Eastern and Western Capes and KwaZulu-Natal. Subtropical crops such as avocados, mangos, bananas, litchis, guavas, pomegranates, pawpaws, grenadillas, and macadamia and pecan nuts are produced mainly in Mpumalanga and the Limpopo Province.

3. Livestock Farming

Livestock is the largest agricultural sector in South Africa, with a population of some 13.8-million cattle and 28.8-million sheep. Stock breeders concentrate on the development of breeds that are well adapted to diverse climatic and environmental conditions. FABCOS’ concentration is on the following areas of livestock farming:

 

 

4. Beef farming

FABCOS cattle farms are in the Free State, Gauteng, North West and Western Cape Provinces There is currently a growing livestock of over 2000 cattle on the farms.

A. Sheep and Goat Farming

FABCOS goat and sheep farms are located in the Free State, Gauteng and Western Cape Province with a growing range of over 1500 goats and sheep. In the town of Krugerdorp, closer to the historic Cradle of Humankind, FABCOS owns a cheese, goat milk producing farm that produces over 1,500 litres of goat milk per day. The milk is processed to make goat cheese for local consumption.

B. Game Farming

The FABCOS game-farming model has been developed to optimize intensive animal production on game farms, with the potential to increase the capacity by between 2% and 6% per year.

C. Poultry Farming

FABCOS encourages all farms to engage in Poultry farming including broilers and egg production. The eggs that are produced eventually find the markets in the various retail shops owned by members of FABCOS.
The national ko-operasie also runs a broiler business. These broilers are managed by farm managers who are appointed and trained by the National Office of FABCOS.

 

Dairy Farming FABCOS

D. Dairy Farming

FABCOS produces over 20 000 litres of milks daily and employs 30 farm workers. The milk is produced mainly in the Gauteng, Free State and the North West Provinces. The Gauteng farm situated in Krugersdorp, produces goat cheese from goat milk, whereas the two [2] cattle farms in Kroonstad [Free State] and North West account for milk and cheese from Cattle. Dairy and milk distribution franchises are available for members. Equipment, training and funding is provided through FABCOS.
