Policy Advocacy

FABCOS participates as a member of the Advisory Board of the Business Parliamentary Office (BPO) in Cape Town. Some policy advocacy work of FABCOS is done via the BPO which works to strengthen parliamentary democracy by facilitating constructive interaction between organized business and the legislature.

The services of the BPO include liaising between organized business and the legislature, facilitating submissions to Parliament, and coordinating engagements for business and lawmakers to communicate. The BPO also distributes a regular newsletter, Parliamentary Newswatch, which provides a broad overview of the forthcoming parliamentary programme, highlights new policy and legislation of concern to business, and gives the inside track on developments at Parliament. A wide range of Parliamentary related information relevant to business is provided at two levels namely, a basic information service and an enhanced information service which includes interpretation and comment. Examples include:

  • A weekly list of the status of bills through Parliament
  • A weekly list of policy papers tabled in Parliament
  • Alerts to new bills and changes to bills
  • The legislative programme for the year
  • The Parliamentary Programme and Committee meeting dates
  • Weekly summaries of relevant Parliamentary debates
  • Names of Members of Parliament and portfolios
  • Alerts to new legislation and changes to current legislation
  • A customised weekly index of gazetted information
  • Weekly newsletters with links to full text of relevant bills, draft bills and policy papers
  • Full gazetted information on acts and regulations
